“But, I don’t think I am ready for Botox!”

I hear it almost everyday…”Look at my face.  Tell me what I need.  I don’t think I am ready for Botox, yet. What have you had done? Why does your skin look so great? Oh, I bet you are like 12, you don’t even need anything yet.”

It’s a fine line between telling someone they don’t need a thing in the world done, and telling them they probably need 3 syringes of Juvederm, 35 units of Botox, and should start getting some laser work done. Dealing with women and the beauty of their face is a very delicate thing.

I am not THAT young.  The ripe old age of 31 isn’t exactly spring chickenish…  I have done Botox, I have had some Juvederm and Laser Hair Removal is like a gift from GOD!  If you have lines in your forehead that a Mack Tuck could drive thru, I would say FOR  HEAVEN’S SAKE, do some Botox!  Lines in your lips from years of constant “duckface” for those prized self portraits in your iphone(or using a straw or smoking), get Juvederm!!

Who cares what age you are…No one wants lines across their face, and life is a lot easier if you can’t make those nasty frowny faces.

People come here to look better, but mostly to feel better about how they look.  So….Good ahead! Do it.  We won’t tell anyone(and YES! You probably need it)

I will give you something to cry about!!!

I will be the first to admit, I am a daddy’s girl, but these days I find myself calling my mom everyday for some random piece of advice or to tell her any little thing that the kids say.  She is my rock, and I am not sure why I have such a hard time telling her.  Something changes in women when they have children and for some reason it has made me soooo much closer to my mother.  She is quirky and crazy(I still roll my eyes several times a day while talking to her) But her strawberry freezer jam recipe will rival any southern mother’s and I am pretty sure her sweet tea has some kind of drug in it!! If you go to her house for a weekend you will know the menu for every meal before you get there and upon leaving you will realize you have gained at least 7lbs(probably will have learned an extra Bible verse or two)

I am super close to my friends and one of our favorite things to do is share all of the crazy stories about our mothers.  We have entire brunches based around, if its not one thing it’s your mother!   I asked them today what their favorite “mom quotes” were and I got an overwhelming response and a huge stream of text following about everyone’s mom.   “What do you mean you aren’t going to church?”  “Don’t plan life, LIVE life!”  “I will beat you with that.” and my all time favorite from Adella herself….”Do not reward yourself with food, Erica…you aren’t a dog!”  One friend said today, “I have never loved her more in my life.”  Awwwww….:)

All moms have different beauty secrets that they instill in us at a young age.  My mom just so happened to love Avon and MaryKay.  This was probably due to the fact that I grew up in podunk and the closest even Walmart was 25 miles away.  I can still remember my very first own bottle of Avon perfume, Sweet Honesty.  It is amazing that Mrs. Deeter didn’t kick me out of 4th grade for how strong the smell must have been!  Adella was always very, shall I say…forceful…in making me wash my face at night.   THANK GOD!  You can not imagine the amount of teenagers and even some 40 year olds that we have to beg make them wash their faces.  I am trying that same tactic(but now on the receiving end of the eye rolls)with Anna Katherine and Audrey with the help of Clarasonic:)  The second best thing she taught me was.. EXFOLIATE.  She swore by Mary Kay Gentle Creamy Cleanser with a cheap washcloth for 2o years. Third but most important, ‘Mamaw Della’ has never liked me to be tan.  She would tell me stories of how as a teenager she would lay out all day with baby oil and iodine and had the best looking tan legs, but always had an abundance of sunscreen around to keep me pasty and white!  The one that I remember the most is called Bullfrog.    Visit their website.  This stuff is still amazing, www.bullfrogsunscreen.com. I even saw it tonight at Whole Foods!  Use it all over you and all over your kids.  Heck, put it on your dog’s nose!  The more sun damage I see everyday, the more protection I use.

I have daughters, that are growing up faster than I did, I am pretty sure.  We spend countless hours painting nails, fixing hair and applying tons of glitter eyeshadow.  My bathroom is stocked to the brim with mascaras, eyelash curlers, lotions and nail polish…..but I am still teaching them the same “skin values”…..Don’t tan, wash your face, exfoliate, use sunscreen.  It has worked for my momma.  She looks great and hardly has any wrinkles at all!  Plus, She is extra sweet and beautiful inside.

Mother’s Day is Sunday and I can not wait to get there.  Mother’s Day gifts of Obagi in hand and ready to get spoiled rotten! Going to church and sitting in the same pew with my mom and grandmother. Then I am sure at lunch the advice concerning my love life will flow freely…I will try my best to not do too many eye rolls!  I am blessed to still get to hear that annoying advice. HA!!!!!

Love you, Mamaw Della!

Other blogs are fun to read too……

So I have a confession, I may or may not be addicted to this blog. This girl is super cool and I am pretty sure I have a slight crush. She blogs often, and the pictures and content are always fantastic! I have put together loads of preppy outfits and even learned to braid my daughter’s hair(in cool hip braids!!!) Happy Birthday, Dr.Kris!!!!!

The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age. – Lucille Ball

Happy Birthday, Dr. Kris!  We love you!!!!!

You are what you eat….Duh!

We have all heard it time and time again… Do you want to be a McDonald’s chicken nugget or a banana?  Not that either of those sounds very attractive, it is common knowledge that what you put into your body is going to have a direct impact on how your body looks and feels.  If you consume foods that are cooked in grease, filled with fat, and loaded with sugar, your body is going to reflect that in it’s size, texture, and shape.  In contrast, if you eat foods that are high in nutritional value and are void of all artifically added fats and sugars, then your body and skin are going to respond by looking and feeling healthier.

People who want to have skin that looks supple and full of youthful glow need to start by paying close attention to what types of foods they are putting into their bodies.  The following is a list of 10 food items that are good for your skin and easy to incorporate into your diet to get that youthful skin appearance we all so desire:

1. Water -If you have been in our office lately you will notice our very fancy “spa water”…Everyday it is a new flavor and it is AMAZING!  Erica says, you are welcome!   The more you drink, the more you flush all the other bad stuff out of your body and the healthier your skin is going to appear.  Adequate hydration from drinking lots of water can prevent the skin from becoming overly dry thereby maintaining it’s youthful, plump appearance.

2. Citrus – These fruits are filled with the powerful antioxidant Vitamin C, which helps guard against the sun’s UVA rays.  UVA rays are the “aging” rays of the sun, directly responsible for collagen breakdown in the skin. Oranges, grapefruits, limes, and lemons…. in your vodka, lemon on your skin.  Good all the way around!

3. Berries – Another antioxidant-rich group of  fruits that also happen to be very low in sugar.  They’re easy to eat alone or mix them into cereal, smoothies, and any other dish for a sweet, healthy boost.  Berries include strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

4. Broccoli – This veggie is full of Vitamin A, which is a vitamin responsible for improving the turnover of skin cells.  That means when you eat broccoli, your skin gets renewed faster and the newer, fresher skin cells end up on top where everyone can see them.  Hence, the healthy “glow” we all love and want!

5. Spinach – We have all seen how hot Popeye has looked for years and years…I have been convinced since 5 that spinach is the way to go.

6. Omega 3 Fish Dishes – If you haven’t had the smoked salmon at Houston’s or the cedar planked Salmon at Boscos in midtown, first of all you are missing out, second, they are really really healthy!  Nix out the mashed potatoes!  Omega 3 Fatty Acids are considered “good” fats.  They can aid in warding off inflammation in the skin.  Omega 3’s can be found in tuna, salmon, sardines, and shellfish.

7. Flax Seeds – Another source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids.  Sprinkle those little suckers on your food.  You will never even know that they are there!

8. Walnuts – Yet another option that you can consume in addition to fish and flax seeds to get a boost of “good” fats

9. Carrots – Another great source of Vitamin A, and a great alternative to leafy green veggies.  They like really easy too, buy the little travel packs and DON’T dip them in ranch!!

10. Eggs – They’re packed with iron and protein.  Iron can be responsible for the skin’s “glow” and a lack of it can cause the skin to look extremely pale and increase the appearance of dark circles.

It’s just no longer about “skinny” It’s about HEALTHY!

Live Healthy, Look Happy!

Word to the wise: wrinkles are inevitable (sorry ladies, I only speak the truth). Whether we like it or not, they are a part of life. Needless to say, there are many simple tricks you can work into your everyday routine to keep them at bay.
Here are my top ten tips for not looking like this:

  1. Don’t be a straw dog. Try not to use straws (and definitely do not smoke). Pursing your lips constantly will cause micro lines to become serious crevices. No thank you.
  2. Sleep smart. Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to sleep (in terms of positioning at least). The wrong way: sleeping on your face or side. The right way: sleeping on your back (even the American Academy of Dermatology recommends this).
  3. Slather the SPF. No surprises here: SPF is a must if you want smooth, youthful looking skin. While a tan might look good now, don’t forget who you will look like later…this! When you buy a sunscreen buy one with Zinc…..OBAGI!!
  4. Exfoliate: Prevent cracks and keep your skin soft and supple buy using Retin-A….it is the ONLY thing proven to work.
  5. Sleep clean. Always, always wash your face before bed. I cannot stress this enough. Never, ever sleep with makeup on.
  6. Wear your sunnies! Not only are sunglasses a great style staple, they also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from harsh UV rays. Just make sure you buy sunnies that are polarized to ensure maximum protection. And the bigger, the better! (I definitely just gave you a wonderful excuse to go buy a new pair of sunglasses.)
  7. Take your vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin every day and make sure you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.
  8. Eat right. You are what you eat so be sure to make your diet vibrant and full of color. Do this by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday. This will keep your skin firm, hydrated and happy.
  9. Drink up. You’re only 8 glasses away from happy skin…don’t forget your h2-ohhhs.
  10. Smile! While science has yet to prove the direct link between wrinkles and stress, based on my experience the evidence is pretty clear. Stress manifests itself externally (and from what I’ve seen, wrinkles are a common symptom). Take a deep breath, exhale and smile!

That said, if you already have wrinkles—wear them proudly! I have little smile wrinkles. Most women my age would freak out, but to be honest, I kind of like them. As Lauren Hutton once said, “We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life.” Couldn’t have said it better myself…but it can’t hurt to make those “medals” a little less obvious before you join the half-century club. Right?

Latisse!!!

Latisse!!!

One of our favorite clients with her new Latisse lashes! Buy One Get One Free now at East Memphis Aesthetics. No one is ever diappointed with this product, and to be honest I CAN”T LIVE WITHOUT IT!!! It not only makes my lashes longer and thicker, I don’t have to wear mascara anymore because they are SOOOO much darker. Although mine are not as long as……. uhm, this girl(one of my best friends in the whole wide world) They are miles and miles from where I started. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my Blinc mascara, I just don’t stress when I can’t find my tube anymore(It’s probably in my 12 year olds makeup bag)
$100 for a 3 month supply…. So worth it, DUH!

Wear Your Sunscreen!!!!

Its no secret SPF is essential during the summer months. But did you know it’s equally important during the wintertime? Oh, what’s that? You work inside all day so you don’t need sunscreen? Not so fast…it’s important for you too!!!!

UV rays are just as harmful during the winter as they are in the summertime—even if you spend your days working indoors, hidden from the sunshine. UVA rays penetrate window glass, which means you are exposed during your commute and if your office is filled with natural light. UV rays are especially harmful in snowy conditions since rays are strengthened due to the reflective nature of snow. The same goes for cloudy days. So lather up ladies!

All of these forms of exposure contribute to something called “photoaging.” Photoaging is a process of aging caused by UVA and UVB exposure. Major symptoms of photoaging include spider veins on the face or neck, loss of color and fullness in lips and wrinkle formations on the face, neck, ears, hands or chest. No thank you! (Note: You may want to think twice about those hands on the sunny steering wheel too because hands and necks show the symptoms of photoaging the most.) Since even the slightest bits of exposure add up quickly, it’s important to protect any uncovered skin with a broad spectrum UVA and UVB lotion with a minimum SPF of 15.

I use SPF 50 every morning (I use Obagi Medical, Nu-Derm Sunshield). I apply it to my face, neck and hands. If you’re looking for a quality SPF, I suggest buying something with one or more of the following ingredients:

  • Zinc Oxide…the BEST thing you can find in a quality sunscreen!!!
  • Octinoxate
  • Vitamin C: This antioxidant helps reduce the appearance of sun damage and increases skin’s moisture

You would be very surprised at the amount of people that never wear sunscreen at all…and sitting behind this desk all day, I can spot them a mile away.  The ladies who look the best and have the healthiest, youngest looking skin, wear sunscreen everyday.  They not only wear it,they carry it around in their purses and apply it every couple of hours.  It didn’t take me very long of working here to get on their bandwagon.  WON”T GO WITHOUT IT!  EVER!

Best App Ever!!!!

Best App Ever!!!!

A few years ago I discovered one of the most important apps of my life – one that counts my calories and tracks my weight:

My Fitness Pal (www.myfitnesspal.com)

This app is designed to accept your current weight and design a customized program to meet your weightloss goals in a designated time frame. Yes, it sounds complicated, but it’s much easier than picking up your phone and dialing 1-800-Jenny!

All you have to do is log onto your iPhone MyFitnessPal app, or the MyFitnessPal website, every day and enter what you”ve eaten and any exercise you’ve done that day.  The app does the rest for you – it tells you how many calories you’ve consumed for the day and where your weight will be in a set time frame if you continue eating that way.  It will also tell you your nutritional intake for the day, i.e. total fat grams, carbs, protein, etc.

What amazed me is that almost every food, ranging from grocery store to fast food, is available on the site.  To search for foods you’ve consumed, you can either type them in the search box or there’s a scanner available in the app.  Yes, you can actually scan the barcode on the packaging and it will give you the nutritional value of that food item!!!!!

So, all that is good, but the absolutely best part of all…….

This app is FREE….yipppeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

Mollie’s Blogging now!!!

This year I have not been doing enough reviews – I admit…But my goal for 2012 and beyond is to provide you with the latest and greatest beauty secrets out there.  Having worked professionally in the beauty industry over 13 years, I have tried and discovered some outstanding products and procedures that I consider to be the very best available.  Being that we still have a little time left before 2012 knocks on our door, I owe it to you (and myself) to get started a little early.  So…..

Exfoliation! Exfoliation! Exfoliation!

LOVE IT!!!!!  LOVE IT!!!!!  LOVE IT!!!!!

Did I mention I love it?

Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells (yuck!) on the skin’s outermost surface.  The end result is smooth, glowing skin.  Exfoliation can be achieved through two methods:  mechanical and chemical

Examples of mechanical exfoliation include microdermabrasion (microderm), dermaplaning, facial scrubs, use of a Clarisonic Brush, sponges, loofahs, and use of microfiber cloths.

Examples of chemical exfoliation include scrubs and solutions containing salicylic and glycolic acids, fruit enzymes, malic acid, or citric acid, which may be applied in high concentrations by a medical professional, or in lower concentrations in over-the-counter products.  Chemical exfoliation may involve the use of products that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or enzymes that act to loosen the glue-like substance that holds skin cells together, allowing them to fall off (exfoliate) the surface of the skin.

That being said, my favorite methods of exfoliation for home and as treatments offered in a medi-spa are as follows:

Mechanical:  At home – Clarisonic Brush

                  Medi-spa treatment – Microderm

Chemical:  At home – RetinA (for nighttime)

                             Obagi Exfoderm (for daytime)

Medi-spa treatment – Glycolic Peels, Salicylic Peels, and Jessner’s Peels

Stay tuned, I’ll be giving more product/treatment reviews in the near future!

Mollie
